Sexual Harassment in Science
In last month's newsletter we alluded to an investigation regarding sexual harassment by eminent statistician Terry Speed. This story has now been widely reported across several media outlets.

International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) Congress 2019
The ICIAM congresses are a big event in the community of applied and industrial mathematics. These congresses take place every 4 years and gather around 2000-3000 people each time. There are invited talks, but also a lot of mini-symposia, proposed by people in the community, and selected by an ad-hoc committee.
The next congress will take place in Valencia (Spain) on 15—19 July 2019.
It would be great if many women participate in the congress, and give talks. Also it would be great if many women organise mini-symposia.
The call for mini-symposia for the 2019 ICIAM Congress (ICIAM2019) is now open. The deadline for submissions is November 5, 2018.

Take the Panel Pledge
Have you been to a conference where all of the invited speakers are men?
Take the panel pledge and refuse to participate in events without gender balance. Or even organise your own competing event such as the OURSA conference, which was organised after the initial list of speakers at the annual RSA conference was announced. Since the initial announcement, extra speakers have been added to RSA, which makes for a more balanced list. There are sadly many events which contain all male panels.
Commended Paper in Journal of Art and Mathematics
The paper "Sphericons and D-forms: a crocheted connection" by Katherine Seaton (La Trobe) in the Journal of Art and Mathematics is an Editor's Choice Commended Paper for 2017. This paper explores some beautiful mathematics and beautiful craft projects. There are lots of images to give you some crafty inspiration.
EVENTS
Call for SMB2018 volunteers
There are currently around 500 registrants for the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB2018). With so many attendees, some more volunteers are needed to make sure the conference runs smoothly. A volunteer with a first aid certificate is especially needed.
All volunteers will receive:
- a free breakfast on the days they are working,
- a special thank you dinner at the end of the conference,
- a specially designed rugby jumper.
Student volunteers will receive a free ticket to the conference dinner.

PhD Studentship Epidemiology
A Marsden-funded PhD studentship is available in the Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, on the Albany campus of Massey University.
The student will be responsible for the development of mathematical models that describe the interactions between ecology and epidemiology. The focus will be on determining conditions under which changes in the ecosystem allow an infectious disease to emerge and spread. The successful candidate will have a strong background in applied mathematics, preferably in mathematical biology, and have an interest in applying mathematics to real-world problems.
The post is of three years duration and available immediately. Any inquiries should be addressed to Prof Mick Roberts (m.g.roberts@massey.ac.nz).
