ICM 2018: World Meeting for Women in Mathematics

The World Meeting for Women in Mathematics - (WM)2 - will take place in Riocentro, the same venue as the ICM 2018, on the day preceding the Congress. The (WM)2 is a satellite event of the ICM 2018, organised by the IMU Committee for Women in Mathematics. It will bring together mathematicians from all over the world to think about and discuss the gender issue in mathematics and its challenges, initiatives, and perspectives for the future, with a strong focus on Latin America.


IMU-net

IMU-net is the bimonthly newsletter of the International Mathematical Union. The July 2016 edition contains an article about several initiatives of the Committee for Women in Mathematics.


2016 Choose Maths Teacher Awards

On Friday 26 August, Stacey King from Mabel Park High School (QLD) and Peter Chandler from Penrhos College (WA) were presented with 2016 Choose Maths Teacher Awards.

The ABC's 7.30 program (August 26, 2016) presented a piece on the Choose Maths Awards, including a profile of Stacey King.

EVENTS

National Symposium: Connecting Women in STEMM

This event is hosted by Women in Science Australia. There will be a variety of wonderful speakers, including WIMSIG Member Assoc. Prof. Birgit Loch.

Registration is open until Monday 5 September, 2016.


AWM Research Symposium 2017

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is hosting its fourth research symposium at UCLA on April 8-9, 2017.


WIMSIG Conference 2017

Celebration of Women in Mathematics

OPPORTUNITIES

Women in STEM Entrepreneurship Program

Applications are now open for grants of up to $250,000 to support outreach projects aimed at girls and women to foster interest in STEM and entrepreneurship, to develop innovation and entrepreneurial skills, and to build professional networks.

This project was launched by Greg Hunt (Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science) and Michaela Cash (Minister for Women) on August 19, 2016.

WIMSIG Executive Committee

At the end of the year, all positions on the WIMSIG Executive Committee will be declared vacant, and an election will be held for office bearers. The positions that will be open are:  

  • Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Ordinary Member (two positions)

The Executive Committee consists of the elected committee members and the Immediate Past Chair.

Members of WIMSIG who intend to nominate for Chair, Secretary or Treasurer must also be members of the Australian Mathematical Society.  Only members of WIMSIG who are also members of the Australian Mathematical Society have voting rights.   

The Returning Officer is Birgit Loch. 

Nominations for any or all of the Offices and Seats to be filled may be made by any two Members who are entitled to vote at the ensuing election, provided that the persons nominated are entitled to vote at the ensuing election and that the nominations are received by the Returning Officer no later than November 30.

People considering nomination are welcome to discuss the committee roles with current members of the Executive Committee.


AustMS WIMSIG Cheryl E. Praeger and Anne Penfold Street Awards

  • The AustMS WIMSIG Anne Penfold Street Awards provide additional financial support to Australian mathematicians for their caring responsibilities, while they travel for conferences or research visits to collaborators.

Applications for the next round of Awards are due by October 1.

Australian Academy of Science Fellowships

The Australian Academy of Science invites nominations for Australian-based early career researchers to attend the 67th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (dedicated to Chemistry), to be held in Lindau, Germany, from June 25-30, 2017.

The Science and Industry Endowment Fund is providing financial support through the "Science and Industry Endowment Fund—Australian Academy of Science Fellowships to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings" for Australian attendees.

The Australian Academy of Science accepts nominations through research organisations.


MEDIA

      • Wikipedia is often one of the first places that people search for information. There are comparatively few women with biographies on Wikipedia. A project of Women in Polar Science has 100 biographies of female Antarctic scientists to be added to Wikipedia over the next month.
  • Women in Science - by Rachel Ignotofsky
      • An art project as part of National Science Week projecting the faces of female scientists onto building around Adelaide.
