The APR Intern webpage features stories of some of their successful partnerships, including some fabulous female mathematicians and statisticians.
Mathematics, Gender and Mathematics Education workshop
Report by Inge Koch (AMSI)
AMSI Choose Maths held its first Mathematics, Gender and Mathematics Education workshop in Melbourne from 19–21 June 2018. Invited speakers from Canada, New Zealand and Australia presented their research which was complemented by the showcasing of the inspirational practical work of the major Choose Maths Teacher prize winners and the Choose Maths Outreach team.
The 35 workshop participants comprised teachers, state department of education representatives, researchers from ACER and academics from mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, psychology, engineering and, of course, the Choose Maths team.
The participants welcomed the opportunity to meet with people from outside their normal 'boundaries' with a clear indication from all participants to continue with this new network of people with similar aims. The mix of presentations and working groups — complemented by a welcome reception and dinner — led to fruitful discussions in particular on maths anxiety in students, parents and their teachers and on how to address it.
AustMS Teaching Awards 2018
To encourage excellence in mathematics teaching in higher education, the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) has established the annual Award for Teaching Excellence and the annual Award for Teaching Excellence (Early Career).
Applications for the inaugural Awards close July 31. Please apply, and spread the word! More info here: http://www.austms.org.au/Teaching+Awards.
Gender Gap in Science: Global Survey
A major global survey is aiming to answer a big question: How can we measure and reduce the gender gap in science?
The Global Survey of Mathematical, Computing, and Natural Scientists is being run by the International Council for Science and is open until October 31, 2018. The survey is targeting 45,000 respondents in multiple languages to develop a better knowledge of the gender gap in global science.
Further information and the survey itself may be accessed via the following link:
Please contribute by completing the survey; it only takes around 10 minutes.
