The birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani will now be celebrated around the world as Women in Mathematics Day. There are lots of events happening all around the country and all around the world.


NEW SOUTH WALES

Macquarie University

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Macquarie University invites you to attend an event celebrating "Women of Mathematics: A Gallery of Portraits" Exhibition Opening and Public Lecture.


The University of Sydney

The University of Sydney will be celebrating Women in Mathematics Day with a morning tea, panel discussion, and luncheon on Monday 13 May.

University of Wollongong

The University of Wollongong (UOW) is hosting an event in the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics on Tuesday 14 May to celebrate the first Women in Mathematics Day. The event will consist of a number of presentations, including talks from our newest DECRA recipient Valentina-Mira Wheeler and our newest professor Marijka Batterham. These will be followed by a networking lunch and discussion.

The UOW Maths and Stats Society will also be holding a talk to celebrate Women in Mathematics Day.

Title: My Life in Maths
Speaker: Prof Jacqui Ramagge
Abstract: The reading of a play in three acts outlining my life as a mathematician. It will be the story of my life since I started studying mathematics at university punctuated by the statement of some theorems related to the mathematics I was doing at various times.


UNSW Sydney

UNSW Sydney will be hosting a Women in Mathematics Day Lunch on Thursday 16 May at 12:30—2:00pm. All welcome and RSVPs are essential.

Western Sydney University

To celebrate Women in Mathematics Day, Western Sydney University will be hosting invited talks from Adelle Howse, Catherine Greenhill, Leanne Rylands and Huanhuan Li on Thursday 16 May at 3:30pm. For more information, please contact r.hazrat@westernsydney.edu.au.


QUEENSLAND

QUT

At QUT in Brisbane, ACEMS will host a lunch on Monday 13 May.

A selection of successful and inspiring female mathematicians and statisticians from both QUT and surrounds will talk about what mathematics means to them and why it’s important more girls and women consider careers in the mathematical sciences. Their talks will be followed by a panel discussion, led by QUT Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen, who is also a Deputy Director and Chief Investigator for ACEMS.

The event is free and is brought to you by ACEMS and the QUT School of Mathematics. Numbers are limited, so please ensure you register if you wish to attend and please do get in touch if you wish to cancel your spot so it can be offered to someone else.

UQ

This is a networking event with invitations being extended to industry representatives, providing attendees with the opportunity to network and maybe develop some new collaborations. The event is open to all interested members of the mathematics community, including males and females, staff and students, academics and non-academics.

A light lunch will be provided. 

In addition, this event will be followed by a Special Colloquium celebrating women in mathematics, where four presenters will give non-specialist talks about female mathematicians.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

To celebrate International Women in Mathematics Day, Flinders University, The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia will be holding a Women in Maths Day SA Conference on Monday 13 May. 

The careers-focused conference will run from 9:30am—3:30pm at The University of Adelaide and will include perspectives from both industry and academia on the role of women in mathematics, an interactive networking workshop, and panel discussions. The day will also include a keynote address from leading mathematician, and co-founder and co-chair of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) program, Prof Nalini Joshi (AO). 

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided, and a full event program will be released soon.

VICTORIA

The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne will be hosting a panel discussion on Monday 13 May at 5:30—6:30pm in the Evan Williams lecture room, Peter Hall Building.

Panelists include Prof Kate Smith-Miles, Prof Antoinette Tordesillas and Prof Malwina Luczak.

Monash University

To mark the occasion of the first Women in Mathematics Day, Monash University will host a special colloquium by Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen on Thursday 9 May at 2:30—3:30pm, followed by a forum consisting of Prof Kerrie Mengersen, Prof Jessica Purcell, Prof Di Cook and nominated actuary at EBS, Julie Cook, at 3:40—4:30pm, with a reception afterwards.

WIMSIG Mentoring Survey Results

As requested by WIMSIG members at the WIMSIG General Meeting in December 2018, the results of the 2017 mentoring survey have been made available on the AustMS website at https://www.austms.org.au/WIMSIG-mentoring-program.

We are aiming to start a mentoring program this year (2019).

Challenges in High Performance Computing

The focus of this interdisciplinary workshop is on bringing together techniques that are at the forefront of mathematics and computer science for solving large scale problems motivated by applications on high performance computers. The main aim is to foster cooperation and communication between the fields of Algorithms, Resilience, Middleware, Software and Applications.

AMSI Optimise 2019

Optimisation is an increasingly crucial field for industry to drive growth and profitability. Now in its third year, AMSI Optimise moves to Perth, bringing together industry leaders from the natural resources sector, academic experts and the nation’s current postgraduate talent. The event provides a platform to understand industry drivers and foster research collaborations, connecting business with Australia’s future workforce.

The themes of the 2019 conference are Mining, Oil & Gas, Agriculture & Water.

Choose Maths grants are available to assist female students and early career researchers with travel, accommodation and/or carer costs to attend the conference in Perth.

Share your research — submit an abstract for the poster session on Day 1 or workshop talks on Days 4 and 5. Up to $500 in prizes will be awarded for the best posters.
