Choose Maths

The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) has secured funding for a large-scale outreach and awareness project, known as Choose Maths. The goal of Choose Maths is to build self-sustaining education communities where girls and young women share equally in the rewarding careers and rich life experiences that mathematics offers. This project will be officially launched later in the year. See the Opportunities section (below) for a related job advertisement.


AMSI Workshop Review

AMSI is reviewing its workshop program. WIMSIG has been given an extended deadline to make a submission. Any feedback that you can give, to be part of this submission, would be greatly appreciated. Please send feedback to the WIMSIG Secretary, Joanne Hall, by Friday 16 April. Alternately, you might like to make a submission yourself.


It All Adds Up: Celebrating 150 Years of Women Across the Mathematical Sciences

In 2015, the annual Women in Maths Day of the London Mathematical Society (LMS) will be expanded to four days from 14-17 of April, as part of the LMS 150th Anniversary Celebrations, with two days for school students and two days for university mathematicians and mathematical scientists.


Congratulations to Cheryl Praeger

Cheryl was recently inducted into West Australian Women's Hall of Fame in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the education of girls and women in mathematics.

  • We would be happy to advertise to our membership any conference or workshop that has specific and suitable measures in place to increase female participation.

OPPORTUNITIES

The following funding opportunities may be of interest to you, your colleagues, or students.

  • Anne Penfold Street Awards and Cheryl E. Praeger Travel Awards
    • The AustMS WIMSIG Cheryl E. Praeger Travel Awards are designed to provide full or partial support for Australian female mathematicians to attend conferences or to visit collaborators.
    • The AustMS WIMSIG Anne Penfold Street Awards provide additional financial support to Australian mathematicians for their caring responsibilities, while they travel for conferences or research visits to collaborators.
    • Applications for the next round of Awards are due by April 1.
  • L’Oréal Australia & New Zealand For Women in Science Fellowships
    • The $25,000 L’Oréal Australia & New Zealand For Women in Science Fellowships are intended to help early career women scientists to consolidate their careers and rise to leadership positions in science. The Fellowships are awarded to women who have shown scientific excellence in their career to date and who have an appropriate research plan that will be assisted by the one-year Fellowship.
    • Applications close on April 7.
  • Mathematicians in Schools
    • Can you think of a fun mathematics activity to share with school children?
    • The CSIRO coordinates the Mathematicians in Schools program. You will be linked with a teacher in whatever school level you are interested in. Then with your partner teacher you can develop some activities to do with the school students. This could be a Skype call twice a year, or weekly classroom visits. Australia needs more students studying mathematics, and more enthusiastic mathematics teachers. There are lots of schools which are registered and just waiting for a mathematician.
  • AMSI is hiring!
    • AMSI has secured funding for a large-scale outreach and awareness project called Choose Maths.
    • For this project, AMSI seeks a senior academic with an interest in gender and mathematics. The Executive Director will work with AMSI Members, stakeholders in business, government and the scientific community, school and university students, parents and teachers through a program of professional development, awareness and reward to turn around community attitude to participation in mathematics, especially for girls and young women.

AustMS Awards

The November 2014 issue of the AustMS Gazette included a call for nominations for the 2015 Australian Mathematical Society Medal and the 2015 Gavin Brown Prize. Full details of the rules and the nomination process for both awards can be found there.

  • 2015 Australian Mathematical Society Medal
    • The 2015 Australian Mathematical Society Medal will be awarded to a member of the Society, under the age of forty, for distinguished research in the Mathematical Sciences.
    • For further information and to submit nominations, please contact the Chair of the 2015 Medal Committee, Professor N.C. Wormald.
  • 2015 Gavin Brown Prize
    • The 2015 Gavin Brown Prize will be for an outstanding and innovative piece of research in the mathematical sciences published by a member or members of the Society.
    • The award will be for a single article, monograph, or book consisting of original research, and published in the nine calendar years 2006-2014.
    • For further information and to submit nominations, please contact the Chair of the 2015 Gavin Brown Prize Selection Committee, Professor J.M. Borwein.
