Recent Promotions to Professor

Why aren’t there more women in maths or in STEM?

What’s being done about that, and why is it that so important?

In Episode 6 of the ACEMS podcast – The Random Sample, Giang Nguyen and Caitlin Gray (The University of Adelaide) chat with one of Australia’s best-known mathematicians; a woman who has blazed a trail for others to follow her — Prof Nalini Joshi (The University of Sydney). They also explore why a maths education is more important than ever.


World's first virtual uterus gets funding

The new system, to be investigated by Dr Alys Clark (Auckland Bioengineering Institute) and Dr Jo James (The University of Auckland), could lead to better management of high-risk pregnancies.

Alys completed her PhD in Applied Mathematics at The University of Adelaide.


Athena SWAN Awards to be announced at Parliament House

The 2018 Inaugural SAGE Awards Gala Dinner will be held at Parliament House in Canberra on December 5. We eagerly await the news of which Australian institutions will be the first to achieve an Athena SWAN Award.

62nd Annual Meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society


WIMSIG General Meeting and Dinner at AustMS 2018

The annual WIMSIG General Meeting will be held 5-6pm on Monday 3 December, just prior to the Women in Mathematical Sciences Dinner. Anyone interested in WIMSIG activities is welcome to attend. The venue will be room H6-03 on Level 6 of the Hawke Building, City West Campus, University of South Australia, 55 North Tce, Adelaide.

The annual Women in Mathematical Sciences Dinner will be held at The Playford, 120 North Tce, Adelaide, on the evening of Monday 3 December. It is an easy walk from the Hawke Building to the Playford. Pre-dinner drinks will be available from 6.15pm and the Dinner will commence at 6.45pm. Registrations for the Dinner are now closed.

The Dinner is sponsored by ACEMS and the ARC Georgina Sweet Laureate Fellowship held by the current President of the AustMS — Professor Kate Smith-Miles (The University of Melbourne).

The purpose of the Dinner is to support women, and particularly early career researchers, to enter and establish careers in mathematics. Attendees will hear about the careers of the AustMS 2018 female plenary speakers, discuss issues concerning women in mathematics in Australia, and network with fellow WIMSIG members and supporters. Check out the WIMSIG website for advice from the female plenary speakers at this year's AustMS meeting, as well as those from past AustMS and ANZIAM conferences.


Summer School at Institut Mittag Leffler (Stockholm)

"Modern theory of group actions and the special role of finite simple groups"

The main speakers are:

  • Alice Niemeyer (RWTH Aachen University)
  • Cheryl Praeger (The University of Western Australia)
  • Colva Roney-Dougal (University of St Andrews)

who will each be teaching a 4-hr lecture course. There will be additional short spotlight lectures too.

There are 21 places available with funding, i.e., accommodation and meal allowance. Up to 13 additional participants are possible, provided they find (and pay for) their own accommodation.

Even before official registration at the IML is open, we invite applications!

Please include:

  • A short CV and informal statement on why you wish to attend and what you hope to get out of the school.
  • A short recommendation from a supervisor.

Potential participants who wish to apply for financial support are asked to outline their needs in their application letter. Our resources are however quite limited. As part of this summer school format we particularly encourage female candidates to apply!

MEDIA

AMSI recently released a report on maths being taught by teachers with non-maths qualifications. This was discussed by several media organisations.
