USyd now has 4 female Professors of Mathematics
As of November, Mary Myerscough and Jean Yang now hold Level E positions in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Sydney. Together with Nalini Joshi and Jacqui Ramagge, this brings that School to a total of four women at Level E.
A recent article in The Australian provides some background data and mentions WIMSIG.
Heads of Schools of Mathematical Sciences Meeting
On February 17, Chair of WIMSIG — A/Prof Lesley Ward (UniSA) — addressed the Australian Council of Heads of Schools of Mathematical Sciences Meeting. The slides from her presentation are available at http://www.austms.org.au/tiki-download_file.php?fileId=391 (PDF, 6.1 MB).
As part of her presentation, Lesley discussed the Harvard Implicit Association Test. This test highlights our own biases. The website makes for interesting reading, and you may like to do the test yourself to help understand your own biases and decisions.
Science Meets Parliament
Each year Science and Technology Australia hosts Science Meets Parliament — a 2-day event in Canberra, including professional development in science communication and networking opportunities with a variety of scientists, politicians and public servants.
Lesley Ward (Chair of WIMSIG) and Giang Nguyen (Treasurer of WIMSIG) are going to Science Meets Parliament 2016 to be held March 1-2. We look forward to hearing of their experiences.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science — Feb 11
The United Nations declared February 11 the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Please let us know if you did anything to celebrate.
ANZIAM Women in Maths Lunch
The ANZIAM Women in Mathematics Lunch was held on Tuesday 8 February as part of the annual ANZIAM conference. The lunch was chaired by Adelle Coster (UNSW) and the speakers at the lunch were the female plenaries from the conference, namely: Vivien Kirk (Auckland), Petra Kuhnert (CSIRO) and Karen Wilcox (MIT).
Many thanks to the ANZIAM2016 organising team, the fabulous speakers and MC, the 58 participants and Prof Nalini Joshi for funding through her ARC Georgina Sweet Fellowship.
AMSI, AustMS and ANZIAM supported workshops
AMSI, AustMS and ANZIAM have funding available for workshops. There is great encouragement from AMSI to increase participation of women at these events. One of the best ways of increasing female participation is to have some women leading the organising committee.
Have you considered organising a workshop? Start thinking now — the next funding round deadline is June 20.
