WIMSIG Conference 2017: Celebration of Women in Australian Mathematical Sciences

Almost 200 people gathered in Adelaide to celebrate women in Australian mathematical sciences. A/Prof Lesley Ward (UniSA) led a fabulous team to create a space for discussing the full spectrum of mathematics in a female-dominated environment. There was music, poetry, fun, friendship and lots of mathematics! A full report will be included in the November edition of the WIMSIG Newsletter. Search for the tag #WIMSIG2017 on Twitter to gain some of the flavour of the event.


ChooseMaths Teacher Awards

The ChooseMaths Teacher Awards highlight teachers in Australian Primary and Secondary schools who engage and inspire students and mentor teachers in mathematics curriculum.

The 2017 winners are Ashley Stewart from Newton Moore Senior High School (WA), Keith Barnett from Epping North Public School (NSW), Patricia Hosking from St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School (Qld), Vanessa Fay from Australian Science & Mathematics School (SA), Sam Hardwicke from Turner School (ACT), Anthony Martin from Chatham High School (NSW), Sally Tweddle from Presbyterian Ladies’ College (Vic) and Elizabeth Lonergan from Beth Rivkah Ladies College (Vic).

Gender Action Toolkit

The ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics has developed a Gender Action Toolkit. This includes a new project called Professors for Change.

Women in Mathematics Get-Togethers

The following get-togethers are confirmed for October and November (with some details yet to be finalised).


SYDNEY

The discussion topic for this lunch is advice and questions around applying for jobs/promotions. For example, how to choose referees, points to keep in mind when explaining one's research to someone outside the field and things that it's good to have thought of well before the application process. Just for practice (and to get to know better what we all do) let's all come prepared with a one-minute research spiel that is easily digestible by a non-expert.

MAGIC 2017

  • November 13-17, 2017
  • University House, Canberra

The inaugural Mentoring and Guidance in Careers Workshop (MAGIC Workshop) will present an opportunity to explore the many facets of forging a career, in academic, government or industry settings, and to discuss how to create building blocks for success and resilience in careers.

Participation is limited to a maximum of 35 early career researchers (0-7 years post PhD) who are female or of diverse gender identity, who have a PhD in mathematical or physical sciences and are based in Australia. Interested researchers should submit an application, which is available at the MAGIC workshop website at http://wp.maths.usyd.edu.au/MAGIC.

The application is simple — the applicants need to answer three questions and supply a two-page CV. Successful applicants will receive financial support for basic round-trip travel (economy) from their home institution to the workshop and will be provided accommodation from 12-16 November 2017 at University House, Australian National University, Canberra. A preliminary program is available on the website.

The workshop is organised by Professors Mahananda Dasgupta (ANU) and Nalini Joshi (The University of Sydney) and is supported through the Australian Research Council’s Georgina Sweet Award as part of their Australian Laureate Fellowships. The organising committee members include Dr Merryn McKinnon from the Australian National Centre for Public Awareness of Science, ANU.

Australian Mathematical Sciences Student Conference 2017

The Australian Mathematical Sciences Student Conference is returning this year, and we would like to extend a warm invitation to any and all interested honours and postgraduate level students in the areas of Mathematics and Statistics.

The AMSSC is an annual conference run by students, for students. It aims to offer a friendly and relaxed environment in which to build and maintain connections, encourage collaboration, and present research.

This event will be held from the 6th to the 8th of December 2017, at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales. Attending students are encouraged to present a short talk, with cash prizes being awarded to the best in each of several categories. Travel support will be available through AMSI and AustMS.

AMSI Summer School 2018

Interesting Courses for Honours and PhD Students

The upcoming AMSI Summer School will be held at Monash University's Clayton campus. There will be 8 different courses on offer, which may be able to be credited against the coursework component of your degree.

ChooseMaths grants support participation by female students and early career researchers. Applications for travel funding close on Sunday 29 October 2017.

International Mathematical Union

The Australian Academy of Science has the opportunity to nominate a candidate for the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). After nomination, the candidate will be voted on at the General Assembly in Rio 2018. It should be someone interested in the objectives of the IMU: promoting maths internationally – with special foci on excellence (the prizes, the ICMs), maths education (ICMI), connections with Science (ICSU), developing countries (CDC) and/or new technologies as they affect maths. And the person must have a sufficient international reputation to hold a realistic chance of being elected.

Nominations close late in October, so to enable the Academy to prepare a nomination, please send suggested names (with the agreement of the person suggested) to Peter Forrester ASAP.

European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad Team Leader

The Australian Mathematics Trust is supporting an Australian team competing at next year’s European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad.

A part-time paid EGMO Team Leader is being recruited. Suitable candidates will have experience with teaching mathematics and experience with the duty of care issues that arise with secondary school children.

Interested candidates need to reply to the selection criteria (maximum two pages) and send through a CV to recruitment@amt.edu.au by close of business on Friday 13 October 2017 and should feel free to ring Nathan Ford if they have any questions.


ANZIAM Medals

Nominations are being sought for the following ANZIAM Medals.

Nominations can be made by any member of ANZIAM other than the nominee. Your friendly WIMSIG Executive Committee can help you with a nomination for yourself or a colleague.

The closing date for these awards is Monday 6 November 2017.

 

WIMSIG Chair

WIMSIG will be electing a new Incoming Chair this year to start their term on the Executive Committee in February 2018. If you are interested in the opportunity, or know somebody with the skills to lead the drive for gender equity in Australian Mathematics over the next four years, please consider nominating for the position by November 30. Nominations should be emailed directly to the Returning Officer — Birgit Loch.

The current WIMSIG Chair, Yvonne Stokes, is happy to answer any questions you may have about the role.
