Gender Representation Data for STEM in Australia
When discussing gender equity it is often handy to have some data to talk about. The SAGE website has collated some data broken down by STEM fields presented with some nice charts and graphs.
The complete data for 2014 indicates that Mathematics has the second worst gender balance (after IT) for academic and research staff with 23% of mathematics academics being female, and 77% male.

WIMSIG Conference: Celebration of Women in Mathematics
- SAVE THE DATE: September 25-26 in 2017
- University of South Australia
This conference is designed to be a celebration of women in mathematics research. It will be the first such conference in Australia. “Mathematics” will be broadly interpreted to mean the mathematical sciences, including statistics and all applications of mathematics.
WIMSIG believes that this conference will play an important role in advancing gender equity in Australian mathematics. Female researchers in the mathematical sciences, as well as leaders (of any gender), will be inspired by being in a majority-female research environment such as this. In addition, we expect the conference to help develop research collaborations and networking, as well as to provide exposure to senior department staff of potential candidates for hiring. We are very enthusiastic about the conference and we expect it to be productive, inspiring and enjoyable.
OPPORTUNITIES
The University of Newcastle (UON) - Women in Science Chair
UON is appointing the inaugural UON Women in Science Chair. This is a position for a senior scientist, engineer or mathematician with skills and interest in advocacy.
This role will be at the forefront of positive change, and lead in research translation and world-class innovation. The position will take a leading role in building and promoting gender equity within STEMM, such as mentoring female academics, inspiring students to pursue a research career in STEMM, and supporting UON’s participation in the Athena SWAN initiative. The appointment will be important to cultural change and building future capability in the current generation of researchers, the upcoming generation and the one to follow after.
More information can be found at http://www.newcastle.edu.au/join/women-in-science-chair.
